The UX Challenge
The electronic parts catalogue portal simplifies the process of purchasing electronic parts for Britain's largest automotive manufacturer. It offers a convenient and reliable platform for customers to find and order the right components needed for vehicle maintenance, repairs, or upgrades.
The challenge was to design an intuitive and streamlined parts search and selection experience that helps users easily find and select the right parts for their vehicles, considering factors such as vehicle models, compatibility, and accurate part identification.
User Types:

Internal Users
These internal users are typically staff members working in the vehicle dealership. They have access to the Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) platform without having to pay a subscription fee. Retailers use EPC to identify and order vehicle parts for the dealership's service and repair operations, while admins may assist in managing the EPC platform and user accounts within their dealership.

Third Party
This user type includes employees of non-dealership partners, such as distributors or importers, who have a business relationship with the dealership. They are granted access to the EPC platform and are not charged for the same. They may require access for various purposes, such as parts ordering, inventory management, or technical support.

Sponsored Independent
Independent dealers or service providers who have a sponsorship from an established retailer gain access to the EPC platform. They can use it to source and order genuine vehicle parts for their independent operations with the sponsorship serving as their authorisation.

True Independent
Independent dealers or service providers who are not able to obtain sponsorship from a retailer have the option to pay for access to the EPC platform. They can choose a subscription plan (e.g. 1 month, 6 months or 1 year) and make a payment before they can start using the system. This allows them to access and procure vehicle parts for their independent businesses.

EU Download User
To comply with EU legislation, the vehicle dealership offers a specific user category for individuals requiring machine-readable catalogue data downloads. These users receive a URL for a dedicated landing page where they can log in to the EU-specific EPC system. These Users ensure compliance with data sharing regulations while providing access to the necessary catalogue data for the specified users.

Solution implemented:

Simplified and Intuitive Interface:
Designed a clean and intuitive user interface that guides customers through the parts search process. Used clear navigation, well-organized categories, and visually distinct sections to help users easily understand and navigate the catalogue. Gave them an option to view catalogues in either a list or tile view.

Smart Filters and Search:
Implement smart filtering options that allow users to refine their search results based on specific criteria such as vehicle model, part category, or VIN/Reg number. Provided a prominent search bar with auto-suggestions to assist users in quickly finding relevant parts.

Visual Representation and Diagrams:
Included clear product images, diagrams, and technical drawings to help users visually identify the parts they need. Provided multiple views, zoom functionality, and the ability to rotate images for detailed examination of the parts. The users could also add notes for their team to view if a part was superseded/unavailable etc.

Enhanced Part Descriptions:
Ensured that each part's description includes accurate and detailed information, such as specifications, dimensions, and any special instructions or warnings. Presented the information in a concise and scannable format to aid users in making informed decisions. Gave an option to print/download parts selected.
